This 12.3 mile hike is a killer of a hike. At 8:20 am we started out from the parking lot at Woodland Valley campground. From there the trail heads up a very steep ascent for the next 4 miles to the top of Wittenberg Mountain, a 2,476 ft elevation gain in only 3.57 miles. Once there we were rewarded with a fantastic view. We started our hike with the steepest and toughest section hoping that having fresh legs and knees in the morning we could handle the ascent. If we had started at Denning Rd. we would have to hike down this steep section at the end of our hike. Our knees thanked us for our choice. As you can see, the hike, and sometimes the climb, was hard but at the same time very interesting. The day was cool enough to keep the bugs at bay but warm enough for a great hike. We had Sun then clouds more Sun more clouds, rain sprinkles and finally more Sun.
yes a perfect day to go hiking.
